Semantics of Differential Object Marking in Persian ∗

چکیده
Differential Object Marking (DOM) is a prevalent phenomenon in the world’s languages in which the case marking of the object NP is determined by certain semantic factors. Notions such as “animacy”, “definiteness”, “specificity”, and “topicality” are often invoked to explain the semantic contribution of the case marker in languages with DOM. In this paper, I investigate the semantic contribution of the accusative marker rā in Persian. I propose that when rā appears on an NP object, it triggers an existential presupposition. In other words, a construction such as “book-rā” in Persian, presupposes that the set denoted by “book” is non-empty (∃x book(x )). This explains why rā appears on all definite NPs. Definite NPs carry both existential and uniqueness presuppositions. This proposal further predicts that an indefinite NP marked by rā carries an existential presup∗I would like to thank Paul Kiparsky, Cleo Condoravdi, Vera Gribanova, Eve Clark, Chris Potts, Dan Lassiter, and James Collins for their helpful comments on the analysis and ideas in this paper. Declarative Semantics in Object-Oriented Software Development - A Taxonomy and Survey
One of the modern paradigms to develop an application is object oriented analysis and design. In this paradigm, there are several objects and each object plays some specific roles in applications. In an application, we must distinguish between procedural semantics and declarative semantics for their implementation in a specific programming language. For the procedural semantics, we can write a ...
متن کاملAccessibility and Word Order: The Case of Ditransitive Constructions in Persian
In a most recent corpus study on Persian, Faghiri & Samvelian (2014) found a significant effect of relative length in the ordering preferences between the direct and indirect objects in the preverbal domain corresponding to ”long-before-short“. They furthermore showed that the position of the direct object mainly depends on its degree of determination, and put into question the broadly accepted...
متن کاملProjecting Cultural Identity through Metadiscourse Marking; A Comparison of Persian and English Research Articles
Writing projects are socially-situated identities. The rhetorically-loaded aspects of writing, like metadiscourse marking, are more prone to carry such identities. Through analyzing metadiscourse strategies employment in Persian and English (as the lingua franca of academic discourse community) research articles, this study makes an attempt to find out whether Persian native writers take on the...

Tree marking can cause changes in forest. This study aimed to assess tree marking operation and to predict its effect on stand structure of Persian ironwood-hornbeam stands at Bahramnia forestry plan, north of Iran. Therefore 98 trees that were marked in compartment 9 of the mentioned forest in 2017 based on selection system and according to the recent laws of Forests, Range and Watershed Manag...
متن کاملAffectedness and Differential Object Marking in Spanish
In this study we investigate the impact of affectedness on the diachronic development of Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Spanish. DOM in Spanish synchronically depends on (i) the referential features of the direct object, such as animacy and referentiality, and (ii) the semantics of the verb. Several studies have also shown that the diachronic development of DOM proceeds along the Animacy ...
